According to sources, five miles north of the Mexican border on a remote West Texas ranch, a New Mexico hunting guide and his client were wounded over the weekend in an alleged gunfight that a family friend described as an attack by “illegal aliens” and an attempted kidnapping.
The Presidio County Sheriff’s Office appeared to question that account in a statement Monday, saying “there is no evidence to support allegations of ‘cross-border violence.’” A Border Patrol spokesman called the alleged incident “highly unusual for our part of the border.”
A press release circulating on the internet tells an account of the shooting that the sheriff’s office says isn’t supported by evidence.
Hunting guide Walker Daugherty, 26, of Chloride, N.M. was guiding an Audad hunt near Candelaria, Texas, on the border when his party was allegedly attacked by unknown assailants.
The hunting guide Daugherty and his fiancée, another hunting guide and his wife were staying in a lodge at the Circle Doug Ranch. Edwin Roberts, the hunter, and his wife were asleep in a rented RV nearby when gunmen attempted to take the vehicle by force.
Daugherty was shot in the abdomen when he tried to stop the gunmen from taking the RV with his clients inside, according to a statement issued by the westerner that described the attack as a kidnapping attempt. Roberts, 59, was shot in the arm.
The RV was “riddled with bullet holes,” the statement said.
According to a Go Fund Me account for Walker Daugherty, it states “they were involved in a shootout with some illegals, when the illegals tried to steal Walker’s .. RV with them still inside” Ashely Boggs, Daugherty’s girlfriend said.
Multiple law-enforcement agencies responded to emergency calls and were able to secure the ranch, but not before Daugherty and Roberts each suffered gunshot wounds. The men were airlifted to El Paso for treatment for severe injuries from gunshot wounds.
According to the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office the two patients remain in an El Paso Hospital being treated for the injuries sustained during the shooting.
The Presidio County Sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing, and details of the shooting are not yet released.
We will update the story when more details emerge.
