Handgun Deer Hunting
The discussion is always up for debate when it comes to handgun deer hunting. The consensus is that most pistols lack the firepower to put down an animal humanely. Truth to the matter is this, I have been handgun hunting on hogs for the last several years and put down plenty of hogs quickly and humanely with every pistol from .357 magnum to .44 magnum. Wild hogs are a tough animal to put down, even with a high powered rifle yet alone a pistol.
Handgun hunting is much like bow hunting where you have to get close to your game and know your weapons capabilities. Another important factor is the ammo your using to hunt with. Today’s ammo is better than ever especially for speed and maximum penetration designed for hunting. Once you’re comfortable with your pistol and learn the effective range, it becomes a great new challenge to hunting deer at close range.
This last year I decided to deer hunt with my 1911 .45 Kimber pistol pushing the limits of what most would call an inadequate round for handgun deer hunting. However, as you can see in this video at the correct range with the right ammo, the 1911 .45 pistol will put down a nice buck with no problem at all.
